High Bacterial Counts

Beach Closed due to high Bacterial count
|
The beach immediately south of the Redondo pier, often is closed due to high bacterial counts. The beach is tested daily. During the 2005-2006 May to May period, the beach was given a F grade by Heal the Bay. In it's annual beach report, Heal the Bay had this to say: "Water quality at the Redondo Municipal Pier was also poor for all three time periods this past year. While the pier’s wet weather grade improved slightly from the torrential rains and an F grade in 2004–2005 to a D this year, dry weather and AB411 time period water quality slipped to F grades from good and fair marks the previous year" The city of Redondo Beach has performed extensive repairs and upgrades to the sewage system on the pier and all leaks have been eliminated. The storm drain in the area has been diverted. Yet the problem continues. The Water Quality Task Force has recommended that a bacterial source identification program be developed and implemented to help solve the problem. This would help determine if the bacterial contamination is a result of inputs from marine animals or from land based human and animal inputs. Heal the Bay beach report card for LA county
