During October of 2003 and June of 2005, red tide entered King Harbor and caused massive fish kills due to a lowering of dissolved oxygen in the water. Every fish in the harbor died, floated, and decomposed causing massive water pollution for over a 10-week period each time. The resulting surface scum and stench caused a very unpleasant experience for users of the harbor and caused many visitors to avoid the harbor area.

A third event occurred at the end of September 2005. This time a group of volunteers from the Redondo Beach Boaters Association (RBBA) formed a team to scoop out the dead fish. Over a 5-day period, 6.5 tons of fish were removed and disposed of by the city . Due to this removal, the stench level did not rise to extreme levels, massive scum did not occur, and the harbor was back to normal in 3 weeks. It has been shown that responding to these red tide events in a timely fashion can reduce the resulting water pollution and shorten the cycle by up to 2 months.
